Structural Podiatry.
Structural Podiatry.
This is our passion hence the re-brand from Matthew Rimmer Podiatry to Structurally Strong Podiatry.
Foot mobilisation and joint manipulation techniques are not traditionally taught in the undergraduate Podiatry degree.
Our Podiatrist Matthew has spent over 10 years learning and perfecting manual therapy and it is his passion. He has spent considerable time and money investing in his skills and has learned from Physios, Chiropractors and Osteopaths in order to offer this form of treatment to his clients.
Combined with his knowledge of biomechanics, custom orthotic prescription and shoe expertise he offers a unique approach to lower limb problems that often stem from poor foot and ankle mechanics.
What is Structural Podiatry?
Structural Podiatry can be used to help relieve symptoms of painful, stiff joints and improve mobility and joint function.
It is a “hands on” treatment using techniques that are similar to the manual therapy techniques used by Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Physiotherapists.
Podiatrists have expertise in diagnosing, assessing and treating foot related problems and we have been specially trained in using manual therapy to provide the very best outcomes for those patients that are suitable for this type of treatment.
Are you suitable for this type of therapy?
If your feet feel tired, stiff, achy and the joints feel ‘locked up” then there is an excellent chance that you will get significant benefits from manual therapy.
We will provide a thorough assessment which will include some or all of the following;
- Muscle strength and flexibility
- Feel, quality and range of motion of the joints of the foot, ankle, knee and hip.
- Static examination of posture
- Gait analysis
- Referral for weight bearing foot and ankle x-rays (these are bulk billed)
- Referral for diagnostic ultrasound (if clinically required)
We offer treatment plans for Structural Podiatry.
A comprehensive treatment plan will be formulated and if we decide that you would benefit from this form of therapy a series of hands-on gentle mobilisations and manipulations of the affected joints is performed using a set protocol.
Very easy, simple to perform exercises are prescribed to accompany the manual therapy. Patients are provided with clear instructions and video links to the exercises which will specifically target the problematic area. The exercises only take a few minutes each day and can be done whilst watching TV, reading or even cleaning your teeth!!
If you are fed up of foot pain, tired or achy feet we can help.
What You’ll Feel and See with Treatment.
- Increased joint mobility, easier movement in feet/ankles/knees, less stiffness when getting out of bed or after rest.
- Decreased pain during everyday activities, walking, standing, going up stairs.
- More flexibility in footwear choice as strain is reduced.
- Better control over walking/running, fewer flare-ups, and more confidence in movement.
What Else Structural Podiatry Can Target.
Plantar Fasciitis & Heel Spurs
When the tissue along the under-side of your foot gets irritated, or a small bony spur forms on the heel, structural issues such as poor alignment or weak foot muscles can make it worse. Manual therapy combined with simple to perform structured exercises often helps reduce inflammation, improve flexibility, and ease pain and helps prevent further issues in the future.
Achilles Tendinopathy
Morton’s Neuroma
A sharp or burning pain between the toes often caused by nerve compression. Structural podiatry can identify contributing mechanical issues and through gentle manual therapy plus changes in footwear and orthotic support we can relieve pressure on the nerve and reduce symtoms and avoid the need for surgical intervention.
Other Lower Limb Concerns
Problems such as shin splints, knee pain and chronic ankle problems can potentially benefit from a structural podiatry assessment. This can often reveal patterns in postural issues, joint range and quality of movement that helps explain why pain persists.
Matthew’s Expertise.
Matthew has undertaken extensive training in this modality having attended seminars, courses and having had specialist one on one training by world renowned Podiatrist and manual therapist Ted Jedynak and his team at the Foot and Leg Centre in Adelaide.
Since completing his training he has been perfecting his skills which allows him to offer an alternative approach for patients who have reduced joint mobility and suffer from painful stiff joints in the lower limb and specifically the foot and ankle.
Patients that have benefited from this treatment have been less dependent on orthotics, had greater freedom in footwear selection and have even avoided surgery.
He has successfully used manual therapy to help people that can’t wear orthotics or often prefer to go barefoot.
