Could you Benefit from Orthotics?

  • Do you stand or walk on hard surfaces for more than 4 hours daily?
  • Do you participate regularly in any physical sport?
  • Do you suffer from back pain, knee pain and/or foot and ankle pain?
  • Do your feet or legs ache when you walk or when you have been on your feet for only a few hours?
  • Do your shoes wear unevenly?
  • Do you have joint pain while standing, walking, or running?
  • Is one of your legs shorter than the other?
  • Do you have knock knees or bowlegs?
  • Do you have obvious foot problems (bunions, corns, flat feet, etc.)?
  • Do your feet “toe out” or “toe in” when you are walking?

If you said yes to any of the above, you need to see us for a Podiatry assessment where it will be determined whether you may benefit from orthotics as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

What are Orthotics?

Orthotics are prescribed medical devices that are placed in shoes with the goal being to improve the mechanics of the way the foot functions in order to support and redistribute pressure away from prominent or painful joints. They can be used very successfully as part of a treatment plan to alleviate foot and ankle, knee, hip and/ or lower back pain. They can be prescribed to help all age groups from young children to the elderly and for people of all activity levels from mildly active people to elite athletes.

Orthotics come in all shapes and sizes and vary considerably in look, function and materials used. After seeing thousands of patients over the years and using several types of orthotics Matthew will choose the most suitable device for your needs.

This is based on the following:

  • The activities that the orthotics are designed for.
  • The style of footwear that they are to be used in.
  • The weight of the patient and the symptoms or problems that the patient presents with.

What does the Orthotics Process Involve?

1. Initial Consultation
If, after a thorough initial exam and consultation, it is decided that orthotics are required the next step is to perform what is known as a biomechanical assessment.
2. Biomechanical Assessment

This consult takes approximately 30 minutes and involves taking a complete history,
analyzing the patient’s gait (the way they walk), assessing shoe wear, evaluating muscle
strength and tone, and checking joint range of motion, among other things.

The 30-minute appointment includes:

  • A detailed history of your symptoms
  • Gait analysis (how you walk)
  • Assessment of your shoes
  • Muscle strength and tone testing
  • Joint range of motion checks
3. 3D Digital Foot Scan
Once this is completed a 3D digital scan is taken of both feet using the very latest digital scanning equipment and computer aided design software. The days of messy plaster of paris are long gone! Scans are quick, easy and can be repeated if necessary
until Matthew is happy with the captured scan.
4. Custom Design
Once Matthew is happy with the scan of both feet he uses the very latest computer aided design software to make any necessary modifications. This ensures that the fabricated orthotics are tailored specifically to the contours of both feet. It also allows for exact placement of “sweet spots” in order to deflect or reduce pressure from painful areas of the foot.
5. Fitting Appointment
Once this process is completed a comprehensive prescription form is completed and the data is sent to an external laboratory where the orthotics are manufactured to my exact specification.
The turnaround is approx. 8 days but in emergencies the turnaround can be significantly quicker!
6. Complimentary Review
The orthotics are then checked, and a fitting appointment is made where the orthotics are fitted into the patient’s footwear. Comprehensive wearing instructions are given both verbally and in writing.

Orthotics FAQs.

What are orthotics, exactly?

Orthotics are custom-designed shoe inserts that support, align, or improve the function of the foot. They help distribute force more evenly, reduce stress on certain tissues, and improve comfort during movement.

Will orthotics fix my problem by themselves?

Orthotics are a tool, not a complete cure. They work best when used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may include a combination of the following:appropriate exercises, footwear advice, manual therapy and sometimes shockwave therapy

How long until I feel a difference?
Some patients notice improvement within days; for others it might take a few weeks. Because your body needs time to adapt, it’s important to ease in gradually and monitor how your feet respond.
Do I need to break them in?
Yes. Start by wearing them for a short period (1–2 hours) on the first day, then gradually increase wear time. This helps your muscles, tendons, and joints adjust without irritation.
Can orthotics be used for kids?
Absolutely. Children’s feet are still developing, so orthotics are often lighter and adaptable. We tailor designs and wear protocols to ensure comfort and growth support.
How often do they need to be replaced?
It depends on wear, your activity level, and changes in your structure or biomechanics. Commonly, orthotics last between 2 to 5 years. We also check them during regular reviews to see if repairs or updates are required.
Will health insurance cover orthotics?

If you are covered under “extras” for podiatry, many health insurance companies will pay towards the cost of orthotics. We can provide a quote through our HICAPS terminal that will let you know the exact gap fee.We will do this before we proceed with prescribing the orthotics so there are no hidden suprises!

What if my orthotics feel uncomfortable or cause new pain?

Our custom made orthotics are incredibly accurately contoured to your feet so it is very rare for any issues to occur. We have over 25 years of experience in prescribing orthotics!  If however you are in any way unhappy we will make adjustments as required free of charge until you are happy with them as part of out orthotic comfort guarantee.
